Fourteen Days

about

This song is inspired by John, an incredible 102-year-old gentleman who I met during a songwriting project with the Coventry-based charity Good Neighbours.

When John was a pilot in WWII, he was shot down behind enemy lines. After parachuting to safety he was taken in by some very kind people and then followed the railway line back to safety. He spent 14 days eating wild fruit and avoiding capture. When he made his back to safety he was nearly shot as they suspected he was a spy!

Good Neighbours support lonely and isolated over 50s around Coventry.

I am very grateful to the National Lottery Community Fund for supporting this songwriting project.

lyrics

It’s nearly time to head for home
Cockpits dark I see the lights
Pilot radios words that we don’t want to hear
There’s an enemy stuck on our rear

Parachute on my back
Time to abandon this craft
Pull the chord and cross my fingers and toes
Jump out into the cold unknown

Falling
Will I make it out alive?
Falling
Will I ever be alright?
Surely, I’ll make it
I’ll make it won’t I?

Sit on the muddy ground
Distant dog bark welcomes me
Walk slowly to the flickering light
An old door welcomes me in tonight

They change my airman’s jacket
So I won’t be recognised
The fear is creeping into my mind
Good luck now follow the old rail line

Walking
Will I make it out alive
Walking
Will I ever be alright?
Surely, I’ll make it
I’ll make it won’t I?

Oh oh oh oh the days rolled into one
Oh oh oh oh the lonely nights were so long
For 14 days I avoided their gaze
For 14 days

I’ve made it back to the line
Somehow still alive
But they didn’t think that I would survive
The Caterpillar Club is my prize

Oh oh oh oh the days rolled into one
Oh oh oh oh the lonely nights were so long
For 14 days I avoided their gaze
For 14 days
